Troubleshooting Guide

This guide covers some of the more common IT problems and some simple steps you can try to fix them. These quick self-help IT tips might help you get back on track without needing full support, however if the problem continues, our team is always here to help.

Unable to Connect to the Internet

If you are having Internet connection issues, and you’re unable to browse websites, check emails, or use online apps. This can happen on both Wi-Fi and wired (Ethernet) connections and is often caused by simple issues you can fix yourself.

Steps to try and resolve:

  1. Check if you can access www.google.com and do a search. If this works, then your internet access is working and the issue may be at the other end of what you are trying to access. If this does not work, try the following steps and check again after each step before moving on to the next step.
  2. Try restarting your computer or device and then check again.
  3. If you are connected via ethernet cable, check to ensure that the cable is plugged in.
  4. If you are using Wi-Fi, try turning Wi-Fi off for a minute and then back on again. Also, make sure that you are within range of your Wi-Fi signal.
  5. Try turning off the modem/router, wait 60 seconds and then turn back on. (Please note that this will briefly disconnect everyone in your office from the internet.)
  6. Does the internet work on any other computers in your office? If it does not work anywhere, there may be an internet outage. You should check with your ISP to find out.
  7. If you have still not resolved the issue at this stage, please contact us for support.

Printer is Printing Gibberish

Your printer is producing gibberish instead of the intended print output. If your printer problem is recent and the printer was printing correctly from this computer previously, then the issue is most likely a corrupt print queue. This often happens when the printer is turned off and then back on again while in the middle of a print job.

Steps to try and resolve (Windows):

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. From the task bar, search for and then open "Printers & Scanners".
  3. Here, you will find a list of all connected printers. Click on the printer that has the issue.
  4. Then in the printer's settings, click on "Open Print Queue".
  5. In the new window that opens, right-click on the print job and select "Cancel". Then click yes on the confirmation window. (If there is more than one print job, it is best to cancel them all.)
  6. Turn the printer back on.
  7. Try and print a document.
  8. If you have still not resolved the issue at this stage, please contact us for support.

Computer Will Not Turn On

Your computer simply won't turn on.

Steps to try and resolve:

  1. Check the power cable to ensure that it is properly plugged into the computer.
  2. Also check the power cable of the monitor (screen) to ensure that it is properly plugged into the monitor.
  3. Check the computer power cable to ensure that the other end is properly plugged into the powerpoint. If it is plugged into a powerboard or a UPS, ensure that the powerboard or UPS is working. (Does something else plugged into the powerboard or UPS work?)
  4. Check the monitor power cable to ensure that the other end is properly plugged into the powerpoint. If it is plugged into a different powerboard or a UPS, ensure that the powerboard or UPS is working. (Does something else plugged into the powerboard or UPS work?)
  5. Is there a power outage? (Yes. We have to check, because there are some people who think that their computer will work when there is no electricity.)
  6. Has a circuit breaker been tripped? To check this, try plugging something else into the wall socket that the computer normally plugs into and see if that works.
  7. So if you are sure that the power is working, try turning the computer on by pressing the power button. Do you hear a beep or a series of beeps?
  8. If you heard multiple beeps, then there may be an error with the computer booting. Check that the keyboard is correctly plugged and try again. If still the same, please contact us for support.
  9. If you heard a single beep, then the computer is starting up without any errors.
  10. Check that the monitor (screen) is turned on.
  11. Check the monitor signal cable. (The cable connecting the computer to the monitor.)
  12. If you have still not resolved the issue at this stage, please contact us for support.
