You may be aware that Australia Post has recently increased the Basic Postage Rate (BPR) from 70 cents to it now being $1 to deliver a standard letter. Mail will also be delivered slower by Australia Post than previously and you should allow an additional 2 days for delivery. For an additional 50 cents, you can purchase a priority sticker to ensure that your letter is delivered at the speed that it used to be. Australia Post has stated that this is to allow them to recover more of the cost of providing the letters service.
So sending a standard letter in the mail will now cost $1 instead of 70 cents. The postage rate for large letters also increased by the same rate. A large letter up to 125 grams used to cost $1.40 and now costs $2 to send. A large letter between 125 grams and 250 grams used to cost $2.10 and now costs $3 to send. This is a 42% increase in the price of basic postage. If you add the additional 50 cents for a priority sticker, so that your mail can be deliverd at the old standard speed, then the increase is from 70 cents to $1.50 which is an increase of 114%, more than double what the amount was before to get the same service you used to get.
...from 70 cents to $1.50 which is an increase of 114%...
If you are sending only a single letter, then this may not be a big deal. It is good to look after the postal service so that it continues, but you also need to consider your own business. If you are sending out many letters to clients or potential clients, then the additional costs can quickly add up.
With this enormous increase in postage fees and slower delivery times, you may want to reconsider how you market your business if you are still using traditional mail to do so. A much more viable way to send your marketing messages to your potential clients would be to use an online email marketing service like the eParrot service that we provide. Not only is this a faster service, but it also costs only a fraction of the price of sending marketing mail with the postal service.
With eParrot, you can send out regular newsletters, event invitations, news bulletins, product releases, useful tips, special offers, and much more. What's even better is that with this service you also can view reports on all your marketing efforts so that you know what works and what doesn't.
By using it the right way, the eParrot email marketing service will also help make you compliant with the Australian Spam Act. Anyone who wishes to unsubscribe can do so easily and the system handles this automatically for you so that you don't have to worry about it. You can also add forms to your website so that anyone who is interested in your emails, can easily opt in to receive them.
